Coppernight’s Salvation, Part One

May 28th, 2010 by maiki

Having made it back to the throne room in the mine/dwelling that was established by the dwarven merchant Kavalar Coppernight, also known as Coppernight Hold, the party finds a distinct lack of a dragon's corpse. It quickly becomes obvious that it had been hauled off towards the south wall, disappearing into a hidden exit.

The Best Laid Plans

Searching the throne, Nith finds secret levers that may upon the secret passage. Upon searching for traps and sensing for magic, attention is drawn to a series of holes on the wall behind the throne. At first suspicious, most of the party attempts to figure out what the holes could be used for, eventually deducing that they are part of a magical and mechanical system used to communicate underground. Once activated they make contact with Coppernight, and learn that the dragon was actually serving a band of deurgar, which had caught the hold off guard and forced them to retreat deep into the mine.

There is a desperation in his voice, as they have been without food and water for a couple of days now, and by their estimation they will be running out of air in a few hours. He is delighted to hear the party comes on behalf of the merchant Ironhews, and encourages them to make hast.

In their retreat they were able to trap various barricades set up to keep the enemy from following them. Now that the communication system is working, Coppernight and the survivors will be able to activate the traps upon hearing the party holler, "now". He warned they should stay at least 15 feet from the barricade when it goes off.

Hequern’s Rescue

In addition to the traps, Coppernight explains the mechanism for opening the secret passage, a simple level hidden on the wall. The party moves forward, deeper into the mine until they reach iron doors. Listening carefully, Kaln is able to make out splashing sounds and muffled gasps. Charging forward into action, the party find a trio of deurgar torturing a poor soul, having tied them up and dropped them in a pit of water, and nonchalantly pouring in acid from above. Joined by two giant ants that were apparently trained, a battle ensues.

Fortunately for Hequern, the dwarf being tortured, Therai was able to quickly navigate the battlefield to the pit, and with Nith's help, were able to retrieve her from he would be grave. A somewhat difficult battle unfolds, as the party has never dealt with such creatures, and were unaware of their devilish tactics, combining acid and poison to weaken their foes.

In the end, however, the party prevailed. Having dispatched the last deurgar, the party rests up and attend to Hequern's wounds. Hopefully they will be able to gain information that will help them in rescuing the trapped dwarves...

A Chance Encounter

May 27th, 2010 by maiki

After being hired to go back to the Coppernight excavation and assist any survivors who may still be there, as well as gathering the remains of the dragon they defeated when last there, the party comes upon a carriage sinking into the ground, and mad cultists intent on destroying them, supposedly the entire encounter having been foreseen to happen.

Once the cultists, a couple of fell taints, and a hive of giant ants are put in their place, the hole that the unfortunate horse and carriage fell into closes, leaving behind only the bodies of the cultists and their deranged leader. Upon examining their bodies you find that they were living in poverty, though the leader seemed to be in correspondence with someone. On his person you find a short scroll with the following written in Common script:

Pung, you idiot! Did you really thing you would be able to match wits with me! Your magic box is but a trinket compared to what it can do, and neither you nor that buffoon Casaubon will get in my way to retrieve it! If you even come near the King's Wall, I will make sure you regret it!

E

Searching their memories, none of the party remember any run ins or rumors of a Pung. However, Stella seems to remember a Casaubon from the White Lotus Academy, a recent graduate. In her research concerning the Chaos Scar, she found that the majority of tomes that dealt with the region had been checked out by the half-elf, and severe late fees were being placed on his account. Perhaps he can shed light on why the cultist was here, and who "E" is...

An interlude

The party is able make their way to the surface without trouble, despite the storm outside being particularly vicious when they leave the Coppernight excavation site.

The going is slow, as the burden of the Chaos Shard, as well as the unconscious body of Benn, seem to weigh the party down. However, once you make it to Kingsgate, and out of the Chaos Scar, your spirits and load seem to lighten. It is a small trip to the shrine dedicated to Avandra, where a ritual and magic circle are all that is needed to return to the White Lotus Academy.

Once the appropriate pass phrases and magical scrying has determined your identity (the Academy seems to have increased security on the circle since you were there last), you are able to get Benn to the infirmary and the shard to the special chamber Marovic has prepared for the Hexpla Psychosis. As you relate your tale of what happened at the excavation site, he appears as amused as he is confused. He has never heard of Benn, and did not know of any other effort to collect the shards.

"I will need time to think on this," he says as he scurries away, waving you away like a cloud of gnats or fresh students. You take this as a sign that you are dismissed, which is about the best you can get out of the aging headmaster.

You will have a few days before Marovic will be able to find a lead for the next part of your quest. This is an excellent time to train and visit the local town of Whitton, perhaps to find an item of power or additional gear to assist you in your adventures.

Each party member is now level 4! So make sure you level your characters and send the .dnd4e character file to me. Alternatively, you can arrange to come over and level before game (or some other time before, contact me).
